Fly Birdies Fly

I came across these starlings by chance as I was out driving around.  It’s fascinating how they form their patterns and when one moves they all move.  I guess these flocks are called murmurations and it’s done mostly out of defense, whether there’s a hawk near by or another larger bird..  This was a rather small group that I came across as normally I just see them flying overhead by the thousands.  These seemed more interested in eating, as when they landed they were constantly picking at the ground.

From what I read, there’s not one single bird in charge, flocks coordinate their movements with the seven nearest to them, how researchers figure that out who knows, but it’s still fascinating and cool to watch.

Good thing I never watched the movie The Birds….
